Capricorn babies born 22 December 2011 to 21 January 2012

Capricorn babies born 22-31 December share a certain sweet-naturedness that makes them want to help others; they know what you’re feeling. In general, they’re feeling generous! They love life, they love people and they’re very, very popular and they just love a good time, especially if they can spend money – oh lordy how they light up around a credit card! Please do teach them how to save: in this respect, they will not be typical Cappies at all! They might have a kooky or eccentric edge, and they do seem rather “different” (in a nice way). Those born right towards the end of this week have a much tougher and more intense side to them, able to endure any knocks that life may kick their way but they’re also excellent judges of character.

If you have a kid (geddit – Capricorns are the goats and their children are…oh never mind) born 1-8 January, you will need to teach them the virtue of patience. They think – and act –  very, very quickly! Interestingly, those born in the first couple of days of January are unable to bear liars or fools and they will bluntly tell you if you’re wrong or making it up while those born towards the end have a softer, rather noble approach to communication, expecting the best of others, and will know the kinder, gentler way to achieve co-operation.

Those born 8-15 January seem to have been blessed with the fairy godmother wish of wonderful aspects throughout, making life a lot easier for them than the usual little Cappie who has to strive so hard to get ahead. They’ll be quick-witted, very irreverent and enjoy a joke more than the typical Goat. Those born on the Full Moon of 9 January will have a lifelong balancing act between their commitments to their career and to their families. All of them have leadership ability to spare and you will notice how easy it is for them to summon other’s co-operation – oh, and that goes for you, too. These guys want the real thing yet may have their hearts broken by those who would choose to take advantage of their loving natures. However,  it won’t happen more than once as they’re excellent judges of character and would make excellent detectives! Try to encourage them to openly share what they’re thinking though as they may seem rather Machiavellian when they’re actually just considering their options. Those born in this week, but especially towards 14 January love being in love and are going to be very, very popular!

Baby Goats born 15-21 January are still blessed with the gorgeous and highly sociable Venus-Jupiter sextile from the previous week although its power wanes at the end of this seven-day period. It is this bunch you will have to refrain from giving them too much responsibility as from an early age they could feel they have the weight of the world on their shoulders thanks to a Sun-Saturn square on 20 January. They tend to be defensive, always expecting to meet with disapproval, criticism or with crushing commitments. They fear upsetting authority figures yet also fear taking control in later life. You will actually not need to discipline these youngsters much at all as they are innately, ever-so-aware of right and wrong and hate to do the wrong thing. Make sure they have some light-hearted – although not idiotic – companions to keep them feeling cheerful. Since exercise is supposed to produce feel-good endorphins, making them run around the park with their own dog would be ideal. Did I mention how responsible they are – and feel? But they have plenty of charm to entice the opposite sex, don’t worry about that, with plenty noticing this quiet-ish, potent character in the corner…

5 tips when buying gifts for babies

Planning to get your baby a gift at the sales? You may find yourself dazed and confused as you look for a holiday present for babies, but with these five rules, prepare to wing the entire process.

1. You’re not required to give a gift!
Some buy gifts for their babies out of guilt. To put some perspective in it, though, do you really think your baby, at his or her tender age, will even know that you didn’t give him or her a Christmas present? Also, what you should be doing for your baby—protecting, feeding, and waking up at the wee hours of the morning—is more than enough reason for you not to feel guilty!

Of course, this rule no longer applies to children who are old enough to believe in Santa Claus…

2. Put what you need at the top of your list
For babies, what they need should be a top priority. This includes clothing, food, and other necessaries. Besides, your baby has surely gotten a lot of stuffed toys and cuddly bears for Christmas already, so there’s no need to buy some more.

3. Buy items in bright colors and comfortable textures
Babies are attracted to textures that are soft and comfortable, so you best go for toys, pillows, and clothes that let them feel just that. Be careful about what you’re getting though, because babies love putting things in their mouth.

4. Babies love toys that make noise
So you should probably look for toys that make soft and interesting noises; these will surely tickle their ears! Soft rattles and bells are two examples. Just make sure you don’t go giving gifts that make too much noise, as these will startle them.

5. If your baby gets a little extra, donate them
After all, you won’t be able to use all of them at once right? Babies grow up so fast, so you won’t be able to use all those pillows and toys. Why don’t you give them to less fortunate babies instead?

57% bought themselves Christmas gifts this year. Only 57%?!

Didn’t get the gift you wanted on December 25?

More than half of consumers surveyed planned to give themselves Christmas gifts.

Last Christmas, around 52% confessed to gifting themselves. This year, the percentage has risen to a whopping 57%, who said that they plan on splurging for themselves this Christmas!

A poll by the US National Retail Federation showed that 6 in 10 consumers gave personal gift for themselves, ranging from TVs, clothing, home goods, and just about any gift that’s normally not given by other people.

Aside from buying personal gifts, consumers also spent more on themselves in general, at an average of $130.43—that’s a huge leap from $112.20 last year.

And the reason for self-gifting? One source says that it’s because shoppers have been holding back for months, and the season is the best excuse to finally indulge.

Another reason is that they’ve been waiting for the huge discounts which often come during holiday sales. Usually, the malls and online shops are full of deals shoppers simply couldn’t pass up!

It’s not all good news though. With the rise of self-gifting and splurging, shoppers have been using their credit cards and incurring more debts. Obviously, this means that you have to think through your purchases carefully before making them.

So, what did YOU get yourself this Christmas?

What you need to know when returning Christmas gifts

By now, the gifts have poured in and you’ve already received gifts that are nice and, well, not so nice. For one reason or another, those gifts that aren’t very nice may be a bit shapeless, oversized, or just plain useless for you. So what do you do with these unwanted gift items?

1. Do not open the package or remove the tags just yet
If you already know that you don’t want it, don’t bother opening the package to take a closer look.  Certain items like CDs, cosmetic products and, heaven forbid, food can no longer be re-sold once they’re opened.

2. Check the store’s return policy
Stores have limits on their return and exchange policy. You want to review that the moment you open the gift and realize you don’t want it. The last thing you want is to realize that you’ve violated a term or limit of its policy unknowingly.

3. Find a way to get the receipt
The idea of getting the receipt from the gift-giver seems almost embarrassing and tacky, but believe me, there are ways to get it. You can simply be honest and say that the item didn’t fit or you already have the exact same thing.

4. Check the deadline
Your holidays may be loaded with errands and chores, but you need to make time to get the gift item replaced. Once the deadline strikes, you’ll have a difficult if not impossible time exchanging the item.

5. Check online retailers and brick-and-mortar stores
Some online retailers will allow you to exchange the items through their brick-and-mortar stores. Some only allow returns through mail. Either way, you have to figure out and negotiate the best way to have the item replaced.

6. Defective items must be returned
Even if they’ve already been opened and taken out of the box, defective items are generally allowed to be returned. Just to be sure though, return them the soonest you can.

7. Some gift items cannot be returned
Don’t fancy the personalized pen or notebook you were given? Too bad, because if you’re name is engraved or embossed on the gift item, you most likely won’t be able to return it. The same goes for clothing items and cosmetic products; for reasons of hygiene, you can no longer part with them.

1 in 3 Brits will go into debt this Christmas

44% of Brits are already in debt because of their outstanding credit card balances. But this isn’t stopping them for spending more this holiday season.

In fact, 31% are ready to spend more than they can afford this season, even if it means plunging into debt. The research by YouGov further reports that the debts will come mostly from credit card balances or the use of their overdraft. Brits will also be borrowing from their relatives or friends, or take out a loan.

And the ultimate reason why Brits will be overspending to the point of debt?

Over-commercialization is blamed for the debts Brits will incur. Children have been pestering their parents to buy what they want for Christmas, even if it’s clearly beyond their financial capacities.

Instead of considering this as an opportunity to teach children the value of frugality and simplicity, parents end up feeling guilty and buying expensive gifts.

Obviously, parents need to understand that buying them gifts won’t make them better parents.

Investing in GoalMine is easy enough. All you have to do is enter the unique numbers and values of the gift cards. After this, you’ll be asked to create a free account. You can then apply whatever amount of the gift card to the mutual fund or the FDIC-insured savings account of GoalMine.

GoalMine will guide you through the entire process, as the service is complete with tools that will allow you to understand and personalize your investing plan.

As a special treat to its new investors, GoalMine will let you redeem 150% of the value of your first gift card, up to $50. The next gift cards can be redeemed usually at 80% to 90% of their value. You can redeem up to 10 gift cards.

Should you buy Christmas gifts for the boss?

Is it appropriate to buy a holiday gift for the boss? What impression will you give to your boss and your colleagues by doing so? Is there a particular type of gift that should be given?

Buying a gift for the boss can be a stressful activity, especially if you take into account the connotations that go along with it. For one, you might overstep the boundaries of your professional relationship. Also, this might be seen as a mere tactic for you to suck up to the boss and overtake other employees in the line-up for that vacant position.

For starters, there is no universal answer as to whether or not buying a gift for the boss is acceptable. You will have to consider the workplace culture and values. Do you work in a laid-back, generous culture? Are there no rules against giving gifts to one’s boss?

Also consider the depth of your relationship with your boss. You might want to give out of respect or friendship—both are perfectly valid reasons.

A second important factor is your motivation for giving the gift. If you’re really keen on giving a gift in the spirit of the holidays, by all means do so. Think about how your boss and colleagues might think of the move as well. Will they be comfortable about it?

Now, as for the price range of the gift, spending up to $200 is considered acceptable. DIY and home-made gifts will also show your genuine intent to your boss, so if you have the time, go ahead and bake a cake! Gifts such as money, alcohol, art pieces, and romantic getaways are out of the question; you don’t want to mislead your boss!

When giving gifts to your boss, the #1 rule is that it should be given in the spirit of the holidays. Yes, there are other factors to consider, but who’s to say that giving a gift that comes from the heart is a wrong thing to do?

Finally, a free app to help you find the best gifts!

Whether it’s Christmas or a special birthday, finding the ideal gift for their loved ones can be a real challenge.

But Pixelka has released the Gifts 1.2 for the iOS, compatible with the iPod, iPad, and iPhone devices.

The newest version, which is totally free, allows users to enter and narrow down gift ideas based on a criteria-based search. There are criteria include the recipient, occasion, price range, category, or any keywords. Your search can also be based on the popularity, price, or relevance.

Perhaps one of the best features of the app is that it’s not affiliated with any brands or stores, so there’s no danger of rigging the search results. Quite clearly, it’s designed to be a universal gift recommendation app that will help you through your troubles of finding the perfect gift for Christmas, among other occasions.

To demonstrate the flexibility of the app, Gifts has suggestions for a variety of recipients: man, woman, teen, child, baby and even your pet! The occasions include Graduation, Thanksgiving, Bachelorette Party, Back to School, Bar Mitzvah, Bridal Shower, Cinco de Mayo, Fourth of July, New Baby, St. Patrick’s Day… the list just goes on. And to make sure you don’t go way over budget, you can easily set the price range before the search results pop out.

Once you find a gift that the recipient might like, you can touch it to reveal a description and a photo of the gift, along with details on where you can buy it. You can also click Visit Store, Add to Wish List, or Connect. The last option allows you to share it with your network in Facebook or Twitter—or even send it through SMS or email!

Two in three gift cards don’t expire and are now reloadable

One thing people used to hate about gift cards is their unreasonable restrictions. Most of these gift cards sound so good on paper, but usually come with towering fees and limitations.

All that has changed, though, as gift cards have become more transparent, accessible, and better than ever.

Recent legislation, such as the CARD Act of 2009, requires retailers the disclosure of all the fees consumers must pay when using a gift card.

The law also requires gift cards to have an expiry period of no less than five years. With these measures in place, gift recipients don’t have to stress over using their gift cards right after they get it.

Prepaid gift cards benefited the most from these gift card regulations. In fact, prepaid gift cards now have a purchase of just around $2.95, compared to the usual $4.95 a few years ago. Also, 63% of these prepaid bank-issued gift cards usually never expire, and can be reloaded over and over again.

Electronic gift cards are one of the more recent innovations in the industry. Virtual gift cards may have been around for a little more than a year, but they’ve risen to become a billion-dollar market. With a number of benefits over physical gift cards, e-gift cards are fast becoming the choice of consumers over its counterpart.

Another reason why gift cards are better than ever is the fact that they are being offered more frequently as rewards and promotions for shoppers. Old Navy, Applebee, and Target are only a few retailers who recently gave out gift cards from $0 to $25 denominations to their shoppers.

5 great holiday gift ideas for kids

Ask any kid, and they’ll surely tell you that the holidays can’t possibly be complete without Christmas gifts. But you must be wondering: what are the best gift ideas for kids this Christmas?

While most kids would be interested at just about any gift they receive during the Christmas, the real test is whether or not they will actually use it. Out of the many gifts they receive during Christmas, only a few are actually used and most are sent to the attic. So, what’s the secret ingredient for a neat and useful gift for kids?

1. Clothes may not exactly be the most fun holiday gift a kid can receive, but it will certainly be of practical use to both the parents and the kid. Taking a kid to a holiday shopping spree for clothes that they want is one sure way to their hearts!

2. The holidays are the perfect time to engage children in books and magazines that actually interest them. By giving them an interesting literary book or a magazine subscription that actually fit their interests, they might actually start to like reading.

3. Tickets to a concert or a fun activity are an excellent way of making the holidays memorable for kids. It may not be a material gift, but it will surely leave a memory they won’t forget.

4. With the necessary approval from the parents or your spouse, a pet can be a great holiday gift. Maybe it’s time to finally give in to your kid’s wish to buy a dog, huh?

5. Asking the parents what the kid wants or observing the child’s preferences will help in figuring out what the best holiday gift is. Make sure not to spoil them by directly asking them what they want though; you don’t want to give them the impression that they can ask for what they want and easily get it.

Pros and cons of shopping locally for gifts

Planning to shop locally for Christmas? Doing your holiday shopping at local and independent stores have several benefits, but does it have downsides, too?

Before you consider buying gifts within your local area, you might want to consider the pros and cons of shopping locally for gifts.

Pros of local gift shopping
One clear benefit is that you get to support your local community.  By buying gifts from local shops and supporting local businesses, you make a gift not only to the recipient but also to your community. Essentially, you will be getting word out on your community’s local products to other people. Who knows, they may like it and keep coming back for more! With a healthier business sector within your community, things will definitely look up a lot of other sectors in your area.

Also, local shopping means that you don’t have to go far and wide to find the perfect gift. This means that you don’t have to set up a complicated shopping plan. Everything is within your reach—all that’s left to do is to figure out what local gift to buy from an array of local businesses.

By checking the social media profiles of local businesses within your community, you might even chance upon big discounts. In fact, 75% of 615 local businesses that were surveyed indicated that they’ll be doling out deals around this time of the month.

Local businesses absolutely know that products they’re selling in and out, so you can get a full explanation of what the gift is perfect for.

Cons of local gift shopping
Although you will definitely spend less time and energy shopping locally for gifts, you may end up spending more in terms of the value of the local gifts.

Local gifts also usually have more rules regarding product returns. While most big businesses will gladly trade your product for something else, the cost and margin considerations of small local businesses don’t allow them this privilege. This only means that you’ll have to be sure that the local gift you’re buying is perfect for the recipient!

Also, local stores don’t have more than a few items in stock. This means that if a particular item you’re planning to give as a gift runs out, there’s a very slim chance that you can wait for its stock to be replenished in time for Christmas.

While big businesses usually tweak their return policy, extending it to allow gift recipients to exchange it for something else. Once the item is bought, the warranty period begins to run. So if you’re buying locally, you might as well do so only a few days before actually giving the gift to the recipient. Be careful not to buy too late though, because by then, the gift you’re eyeing might already be sold out!

Take precautions when shipping gift cards

About to send gift cards to your loved ones through the mail?

Getting insurance for your mail might sound like a smart decision. However, don’t be surprised if your insurance claim gets denied in the event that your gift cards get lost in transit.

Insurance policies for gift cards sent through mail have a maximum price, often determined by the insurance premium. No matter how much the gift cards you sent cost, you’d get no more than the max amount of your insurance policy.

The insurance slip you get after paying for the insurance doesn’t indicate the limitations on gift cards. You’d usually be asked to refer to the “Domestic Mail Manual” at the www.usps.gov.

The website states that currency sent by registered mail can be insured for up to $25,000. So if you really want to send a heap of cash or gift cards through registered mail, you might as well insure it.

Of course, no one usually bothers to even read the details of insurance limitations on their website. But since you already know what you’re up against, taking a quick look at the limitations and restrictions won’t hurt before shipping your gift cards, right?

And aside from insurance, make it harder for postal staff and your recipient to guess what it is by “wrapping” it.

You can even have some fun matching the “theme” of the gift card to the wrapping, ie tea towel for a homeware gift card, a jewellery roll for jewellery, a map for travel or auto-related gift cards, or a scarf for clothing chains and so on .
