How does the number of women in an area affect men’s spending habits? And will it have any impact on say, Valentine’s Day?

According to a recent research, when there are less women in a given area, men tend to be more competitive.

The competitiveness of men manifests itself through their financial choices—men become more impulsive when spending, they borrow more, and they have less savings.

In arriving in this conclusion, men were made to read news articles indicating that the population of women in their area is less than that of men. Another group was made to read news articles saying that there were more women than men.

The two groups were then asked how much they would save from their paycheck and spend based on these statistics. In an area where there was a scarcity of women, men were less likely to save by 42% compared to the other group!

The research, wordily entitled “The Financial Consequences of Too Many Men: Sex Ratio Effects on Savings, Borrowing, and Spending”,  just goes to show that attractiveness isn’t the only factor that drives men to spend like crazy on their ladies!

It means that ladies in low-female areas (like say, remote mining towns or defence force regions) are in for a special treat this coming Valentine’s Day! Men in these areas will most likely forget about their savings for the night and just give their ladies a night they can’t forget or if they really want to go all out, they could splurge on an Orbitz coupon and take her on a mini-vacation.

As for ladies in high-female areas… well, now you know why the men there can be so stingy.
